Marseille 2013 European Capital of Culture

J1Yesterday Mr Hope and I visited Marseille to see what the 2013 European Capital of Culture had to offer.  First up was J1, the latest gallery to be opened, named after the port on which it sits.  As the name suggests it had an awesome view…Blueand some fun exhibitions.  I loved the selection of children’s art on show.  Below are mine and Dans favourites respectively, plus some photographs of Zara Hadid’s new Maritime building I liked.Jose HernandezSamir Idri

We also visited La Friche la Belle de Mai, a once tobacco factory turned mammoth (2400m2 or so) art centre… although I think art centre is under selling it, creative hub would be a more apt description, as not only do they have exhibitions but new architecture, live music, a skate park, lectures and even artists studios.  La Friche roughly translates to The Wasteland.
La FricheOf all the studios I particularly loved Le Tampographe Sardon, a print making workshop whose printing blocks were alternative (to put it mildly).  If anyones interested to see a more representative example of Le Tampographe’s work then I’ve added some to my Drawings and Inspiration page.  For now, here is Debbie Harry –Debbie

La Friche’s current exhibition was called Ici, Ailleurs or Here, Elsewhere.  It was exploring Marseille’s identity – of it’s people, economics, cultures and religions.  One of my favourite pieces was a photomontage by Kader Attia…

…which for me really caught the mix of everything going on in Marseille.
Layers

Layers are a big part of Marseille which not only has new architecture over and above the old but re-decoration and graffiti abound.  Examples of which can be found below – Vieux PortGraphicsGrimeSNCF
